After four hours Porsche and Acura still in the race for IMEC crowns

Cadillac Racing successfully defended its Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) victory in the Motul Petit Le Mans as the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R took the checkered flag for the second consecutive race.

Cadillac has recorded five victories in the annual 10-hour IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-ending clash since entering prototype competition in 2017 and scored its 33rd IMSA triumph in that span. The No. 31 Whelen Cadillac, campaigned by Action Express Racing, owns two Petit Le Mans wins (2019 in DPi era).

Bamber took over from Aitken with the lead and raced the final 1 hour, 59 minutes under the green flag. He prevailed by 5.182 seconds following a splash of fuel with 13 minutes left.

Jack Aitken: “The way Earl finished, the way Fred came in and held the lead, it shows the depth that we have in the team that we're really confident and we all put in great stints today. All did a huge job to hold off the competition and manage the strategy, manage the fuel and the Whelen Cadillac was on fire today. We were able to lead and that was the game plan coming into today -- to do it just like at Indy. So, I'm really pleased that we finish the year in such an awesome way and roll into 2026."

Earl Bamber: "Any one of us could have done it, any stint of the day. It shows the strength of the team. It shows what we set out to do at the beginning of the year with Whelen Cadillac -- to build something really special. And I think what we've done this season -- we could have won a couple more races, came close, were in position -- but we'll definitely take two of the biggest of the season. The guys are fantastic in the pit lane, the cars are amazingly quick at Cadillac, so it makes our job easy on track. I think we're building up something special here, and now we're just looking forward to what comes next."

Frederik Vesti: “Just extremely proud of this team. We joined forces at the beginning of this year, and we didn't have the easiest start to the championship. But the way we've grown together, the way we've been working together really shows and we deserve it so much. Winning Indy was big, but now winning Petit -- one of the most historical races in the endurance world -- that's incredible. Very proud of everyone." Source: Cadillac Racing

First podium for new Aston Martin Valkyrie

Aston Martin’s breathtaking new Valkyrie Hypercar achieved its first podium finish anywhere in the world with a sensational run to finish second overall at the Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta

De Angelis and Gunn, THOR’S regular IMSA season drivers, were joined at Petit Le Mans by Alex Riberas (SPA); part of Aston Martin THOR Team’s FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) line-up and a multiple race winner in IMSA’s GTD classes.

All three drove magnificently and backed up by some clever strategic calls from the pit crew, raced Valkyrie #23 into a podium spot with two hours to go. An inspired decision to make a final pitstop with 50 minutes left, rather than speculatively staying out in case of a Full-Course Yellow period which could have allowed the car’s energy reserves to be stretched without an additional stop, meant that De Angelis ran at full attack to the end of the race.

Despite dropping to seventh, 50 seconds behind the leader, he charged back into contention while gaining positions as the track remained ‘green’ and others made their final fuel stops. The Valkyrie slotted into second with less than 10 minutes remaining. De Angelis closed to within six seconds of the victory while securing the best result for Valkyrie in all competitions, completing an IMSA season in which the car finished every race and completed over 4,300 miles of hard racing around eight of the most iconic North American motorsport venues.

Alex Riberas, driver #23 Aston Martin Valkyrie: “I almost have no words to describe the feeling. What a way to finish the season in IMSA. It means so much for Aston Martin, for The Heart of Racing and for everybody that’s supported the Valkyrie project in the US and in the UK- based WEC programme. This is a huge result and it’s for everybody involved. Today we made a strategy call that was risky, but that was well thought-out by some of the best engineers I’ve ever worked with, and it paid off. I’m so proud right now.”

Ross Gunn, driver #23 Aston Martin Valkyrie: “This is a huge result for everybody, especially when you consider this was a brand-new project and a new car concept for 2025. We started the year super-focused on reliability, and it was only after the double-finish at Le Mans that we put some attention on performance. It’s been a privilege to be a part of a programme that's continuously improved. We targeted fighting for more than just a top-five finish by the end of the year and we’re very proud to have achieved it.”

Roman De Angelis, driver #23 Aston Martin Valkyrie: “I have so many emotions today. I finished on the GTD podium last year with this team, Ross and Alex, so to upgrade that to a GTP podium with Valkyrie is fantastic and something I’m very proud to be a part of. It’s been a tough first year with the car and we’ve had ups and downs, but this is a great way to finish that puts us in a good position to head into the winter and look towards 2026. A huge thank you to everybody that’s made this possible.” Source: Aston Martin

Porsche secures all GTP titles and a new podium

Laurens Vanthoor in the #6 Porsche 963 spent a long stint at the front in the third and fourth hours. Julien Andlauer was forced to withdraw from the Petit Le Mans for medical reasons. The Frenchman had been scheduled to join Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet in the #6 car. Laurens Vanthoor stepped in to take on a double role, driving stints in both of the factory team’s Porsche 963 cars as the third driver.

After ten hours of racing at Petit Le Mans on Road Atlanta, victory eluded them: the two ca. 500 kW (680 PS) Porsche 963 took the flag in third and tenth place – still enough to secure all championship crowns.

Matt Campbell (Porsche 963 #6): “What a relief! We can now call ourselves champions of the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship – simply amazing! We’ve had a fantastic year. Many thanks to the team, to my friend and teammate Mathieu Jaminet, and to everyone working behind the scenes. It’s a perfect day for our entire crew.”

Mathieu Jaminet (Porsche 963 #6): “I’ve been chasing a success like this for over two years. In 2023 and 2024, I gave everything I had, but it just wasn’t enough for a championship title, which was frustrating. That makes winning it now feel even more special. Doing it alongside my mate Matt Campbell makes it even more memorable. Huge thanks to everyone who played a part in this achievement.”

Laurens Vanthoor (Porsche 963 #7): “It was exciting and stressful having to drive both cars in the race. I’d never driven the #6 before – and then I had to take over the Porsche while it was leading. My two teammates in the car were fighting for the crown, so I couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. Everything worked out perfectly: we secured all the titles, so it doesn’t get any better than this.” Source: Porsche

Surprising P4 for Lamborghini ending GTP racing

The Lamborghini SC63 recorded its best ever result in its final IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTP race, finishing fourth in the hands of Romain Grosjean, Edoardo Mortara and Daniil Kvyat.
For its final race before the programme is paused for the 2026 GTP season, the crew of the #63 machine started seventh on the grid. The car looked set to finish a stunning second place at the end of 10 hours of racing, before having to make a late energy stop with just over five minutes remaining. The bittersweet moment dropped the SC63 off the podium, but the factory-run operation was still contented with a fabulous fourth at the end.

Romain Grosjean: “An amazing result for the whole team, we had a few small glitches with the car which cost us some time in the pits unfortunately, but overall, I think we can be very happy with P4, the best result for the car. We were hoping for a yellow at the end, but it didn’t happen; the probability was that it would happen, but the luck wasn’t quite on our side today. We did everything we could, there were a few issues that dropped us time at the stops, we lost four seconds on one of them, but all-in-all the team was amazing, and the car was good. I drove the hell out of it, but we were just a bit unlucky in the end.”

Daniil Kvyat: “This was the best result for the car, and we can be very proud of what we achieved this weekend. It was a tight race, very competitive and we made some good progress with the car, even though it didn’t solve everything. At least we went in the right direction.”

Edoardo Mortara: “It’s a bit of a bittersweet end to the season for us, I think we had some good pace this weekend, and also in Indianapolis we were able to show the potential of the car. In the end, it was a bit frustrating because I think we could have finished on the podium, but the luck didn’t really come for us, because we probably needed a late caution. But overall, we can be satisfied with the result, the team did a great job and the car felt good.” Source: Lamborghini

Acura Meyer Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian #60 finish fifth

Acura rounded out the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season by securing second place in the manufacturers’ championship following the season-ending Petit Le Mans from Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

#60 Acura ARX-06 of Colin Braun, Tom Blomqvist and Scott Dixon would lead 79 laps in the early stages of the race before a mechanical issue. The trio ultimately came home in fifth place.

Tom Blomqvist (#60 Acura Meyer Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian Acura ARX-06) Finished fifth: “It was a long day; we were quite unlucky there in the end. Something broke on the car about halfway through the race, and we just struggled from that point onwards. We lost a lot of time and positions to the leaders, and there were no full course cautions to help recover ground, so it was a bit of a disappointing end. The performance of the car was good throughout the weekend. It was a long year, we learned a lot, and I’m so proud of everyone’s hard work this season.”

Colin Braun (#60 Acura Meyer Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian Acura ARX-06) Finished fifth: “It was a tough day in the end. We had to manage a mechanical issue that cost us a good shot at a podium result. Everything was looking pretty good until about 2/3 of the way through the race. From there it was more about survival and just trying to do our best to work around it. Everyone did a great job trying to resolve and deal with the issue. At the end, it was all we could do–we were in a position to fight all day long. We had good pit stops, good strategy, and we stayed out of trouble. I think we did everything we could do on our end. Scott and Tom did a great job in the car, but sometimes it is just not your day. Thank you to Acura and MSR for all their efforts all year long, we have a lot to be proud of.”

Scott Dixon (#60 Acura Meyer Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian Acura ARX-06) Finished fifth: “It is really fun to do Petit Le Mans and to drive with Acura and MSR. It’s always a good experience and a fun atmosphere. This was a tough day, the pace was really hard for us, and I had an issue during my stint that made it difficult to drive, but all in all, everyone did a great job. Sometimes there are things that you just can’t control, but it’s been a strong season nonetheless and it’s always great to get to come race with this group.” Source: Acura
