Kevin Estre from GT-PRO to LMh

Original πŸ‡«πŸ‡· version after πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ translated version.

CRR: This year, victory and pole at Sebring, P2 at Francorchamps, P4 at Le Mans, P4 at Monza, P3 overall but only two points behind the leaders, withdrawals at the NΓΌrburgring (NLS3 and 24h), and the announcement of your participation in the Porsche Hypercar programme. Is 2022 already a good year for you?

Kevin Estre: It's a mixed bag. The big news of doing Hypercar, of driving this Porsche LMDh is really something that was close to my heart; it's a big goal of my career to try to fight in the general standings in the races I participate in and as for that, I will remember this year as a big year or as important in my career.

In terms of performance, I'm quite happy with what I'm doing; we fought to win all the races we did until Monza this year. In the end, the performance was there. We won Sebring, we made P2 in Spa because Ferrari tried and succeeded a slight change of strategy with a little bit of luck, but they have the merit to have done it and we just didn't manage to pass. At Le Mans, we had a problem but we fought for victory. If it hadn’t been for Corvette, which was a bit stronger, we for sure would have been next. Monza was a big disappointment in terms of performance.

At NΓΌrburgring we were performing well, but then Laurens collided with his brother. At Spa, we were also in the top 3 but had to abandon due to a mechanical failure.

It's a bit of a mixed year but there are still two rounds of the WEC; there's still plenty to do.

πŸ“· Β© Luc Warnotte @ 6 Hours of Spa 2022.

The big expectation is still NΓΌrburgring, Le Mans, Spa and the World Championship. NΓΌrburgring, Spa and Le Mans are over but there is still the World Endurance Championship to win if we do a good job.

CRR: This year, the Porsche 911 GTR-19s dominated the first three rounds, but at Monza, they were not in the running on lap times. Is this the fault of the BoP or the evolution of the competitors?

Kevin Estre: We did well the first two races at Sebring and Spa; we were the fastest car or we were fighting with the Corvette, and Ferrari was a bit behind.

πŸ“· Β© Luc Warnotte @ 24 Hours of Le Mans 2022.

At Le Mans Corvette was fastest and we were second fastest ahead of Ferrari but Corvette was stronger than us.

At Monza there was a change of BoP in favour of Ferrari before Monza. We knew it would be difficult. Last year we won Monza because we did a better job than Ferrari who got their strategy wrong at the end of the race. We won Monza because we were a little slower but a little opportunistic and better than them. This year the BoP was better for them than last year so we knew it would be more difficult. Compared to Corvette, we didn't really know but it was clear that they would be very strong.

πŸ“· Β© Luc Warnotte @ 6 Hours of Monza 2022.

The first laps at Monza, we noticed that we lacked top speed so we tried with as little aero downforce as possible to be faster on the straights, overtake the AMs and fight with Ferrari and Corvette. We did the best we could to try to be good everywhere without making too many compromises but in the end, we lacked "top speed" compared to the competition, and we had less aerodynamic load than them so finally, we had no chance on pure rhythm. We could have made podium were it not that I took a penalty at the end of the race but it was not on the pace, of course a good execution of the race, and a good strategy. On pure pace, P4 and P5 for the Porsche, it was our place unfortunately.

CRR: Are Fuji and Bahrain circuits for you and Michael Christensen or has the past not been in your favour? (Everyone remembers the 2021 final!) How do you see the rest of the championship?

Kevin Estre: We performed well at Fuji. We won in 2019 with the Porsche 911 RSRs, we did 2 in 2018. Since 2020 we haven't been there because of COVID. There's no reason it shouldn't. Monza is the race we feared the most. Fuji should be OK, Bahrain we are still performing well, we have won a lot of races there, we are still fighting for victory. Last year we didn't win but it was on the red carpet and not on the performance. There's no reason why it would not go well, but Ferrari and Corvette are very strong, it's very tight. Corvette are a bit far back in the championship because they didn't score points at Le Mans where it counts double so they're going to have a struggle to come back.

CRR: The races in GTE PRO are always exciting to watch. The battle is intense, even merciless and the final is always very close. It must be exciting to experience that?

Kevin Estre: Yeah, those are great races. Unfortunately we have lost two or three manufacturers in recent years in the WEC, it is good that Corvette comes this year to have a fifth car in the championship. We had a nice championship last year even with 4 cars. It was good to watch but it's always better to have several cars.

πŸ“· Β© Luc Warnotte @ 6 Hours of Monza 2022.

At Monza, for example, between first and second, there was never more than a 5-second gap, not to mention FCY or Safety Car; it is quite exceptional. We had great races everywhere. These are cars that are great to drive, we have good tyres, even if we have to do double stints and we can't do one qualifying lap after another because some circuits are so abrasive that they wear out the tyres and you have to be careful not to hit the tyres too hard, but you can still attack. It's not like some disciplines (F1 or others) where you have to pay attention to the tyres at the start. We can still attack a lot, we can go into contact a little bit even if they are not stock cars and the cars are not made for that. The cars in terms of performance are close. It is a very nice championship for the drivers. We have a lot of fun in most races even if some of them are more frustrating than others, as was the case at Monza, but I think that we take the same pleasure in driving as you take in watching.

CRR: I imagine there are times when you have to have the banana in the car or is it very tense?

Kevin Estre: A big smile - I don't know but there are definitely moments of pure joy. That's why it was my dream to be a racing driver, to be a professional driver. I got there so I already have a smile in my life and when I'm on the grid and when I get in the car because I do what I love, I have made my passion my job. It's rare to be able to do that, there are a lot of young people who want to do what I do; I am proud and aware of it. It is certainly enriching and that I am happy to do it. As I said, there are great fights, there is a very high level of competition, we have a great team behind us which is very professional, we are very united, that makes for success. The Porsche team is very strong and we, in the 92, have been hard to beat for a few years because we have a great group of engineers, drivers, and mechanics, and it shows because in the end everyone has to run as a group to win races. The car has to be on the curbs for 24 hours and if the mechanic hasn't done the preparation job properly, the car won't hold; if the engineer has not prepared well in strategy, we will make mistakes and it's the same for the pilots. Having fun riding but also getting ready has a big impact on performance and results.

CRR: In 2023 you will leave the GTE PRO for the Hypercar category. You were able to test the new Porsche 963 in Weissach, Barcelona and Motorland Aragon. More downforce, lower centre of gravity, hybrid system, ... all different elements compared to what you have known since 2016. How is the adaptation going?

πŸ“· Β© Luc Warnotte @ Lone Star Le Mans 2020.

Kevin Estre: We are still in development. I think I was the second to drive the car after Fred Mako, I was quite present from the start. The adaptation went well. I was a little apprehensive at first because I only raced a prototype at Le Mans in 2015, it was an LMP2, quite different. I actually got in the car on the home circuit (Weissach) and after three laps I felt good already, there was nothing I didn't feel comfortable with. In the end, I'm quite confident even if I'm going to have things to learn, it's going to be a challenge compared to the GTs that I know very well. Of course, it's a little more complicated car, there's more downforce, less weight, more horsepower so the car is faster and different to drive, but it's still a racing car, you have to gradual brake, you have to steer at the right time to take the gas at the right time, feel the car to make adjustments. We have a very strong team behind us which helps us if we ever err when taking a corner or applying a braking technique or other; we have data to manage ourselves and the engineers upstream so there's no reason for it not to go well but it's certain that we will have to work and change maybe one or two small things at the steering to fit this Porsche 963.

CRR: Traffic management must also be very different given the difference in speed?

Kevin Estre: There I think the experience of the 24 hours of the NΓΌrburgring will help us as GT drivers because at the NΓΌrburgring, we are the fastest car, together with the other GT3s, and we overtake GT4s, MΓ©ganes, Dacia Logan, … with very significant speed differences even if we have lower speeds than what we will have in LMH. The performance gap between a Hypercar and a GT in the WEC is much smaller than the gap between a GT3 and a Dacia. This experience of the NΓΌrburgring will help us with the speeds on the approach even if overtaking with an LMH on the outside in the Porsche corners at Le Mans is still something special. We will have to learn and find the right timing. The advantage we have is that we know exactly what it is to drive a GT. This is not the case for most proto pilots who have never done GT and pass us sometimes at places where we say to ourselves "if they knew in which position we are at this moment..." maybe they wouldn't come and stand 3 or 5 cm away from us on the outside of our wheel because we're really in a β€œfight”.

CRR: Do you already know the 2023 lineup?

Kevin Estre: No, Porsche has not yet given us the programme for next year or the names of the crew we will be racing with. Porsche is working on it, I would like to do Le Mans, I hope it will be announced soon.

CRR: Will the car be driven in Bahrain?

Kevin Estre: It was announced as a goal but the car is not yet in Bahrain's entry list. We are still in development. We will have to see if we are ready or not.

Kevin Estre: On a Γ©tΓ© performant Γ  Fuji.
