Louis Deletraz: Two Championships - two crowns
Two times ELMS Champion Louis Deletraz gave us some time Sunday between several Wayne Taylor Racing Acura GTP tests. This is the first part (out of 3) of the interview. Next two articles will treat WEC and IMSA.

CRR: In two participations, you are titled twice. With WRT the first year after winning three races. With Prema this year and four wins.
How do you manage to choose the right team each time?
Louis Deletraz: Endurance was never a plan B. I grew up in this environment through my father. I didn't experience his time in Formula 1 because I wasn't born yet. I have a real passion for this sport and I want to win. I go to a team because I see potential, because I know we can win races. Entering a championship without the hope of winning does not interest me.

WRT have won everything what they have undertaken. I had contact with Vincent Vosse quite late in winter. When the offer came with Robert Kubica who had such a racing career and such experience, I had no doubts; I thought we could do very well. We had a lot to learn but they know endurance.
The season was almost perfect apart from Le Mans where we broke down on the last lap when we were in the lead. That was a blow but we built on it. I was a rookie, I had a lot to learn but we built together. Thanks to Robert who helped us a lot with all his experience.
The choice to go with Prema was a risky one because it was a single-seater team, but with my experience and that of Robert in WEC, their experience of knowing how to win everything in a single-seater, the technique, they have it. It was interesting to be able to mix these two worlds. I didn't just co-drive. From the start of the program in November 2021, we started to work, we put everything on the table, they involved us from the start, which is why we were successful.

CRR: At the first race in Barcelona in 2021 you said you never thought it would be so easy. Were the two championships in the same vein?
Louis Deletraz: Barcelona 2021 was an ideal race: the car was fantastic, the three drivers didn't make any mistakes... it was easy. But it's never easy. When I see how the team worked, the tests, the engineers, the three drivers... we had difficult times, not everyone agreed, and we had to find solutions. It was this work that made Barcelona easy.
The rest of the season was harder. After winning the first two races, at Monza and at Paul Ricard, we were fighting just to be on the podium but we didn't succeed. In the end, our strength was that we didn't make any mistakes. Where we could win we did, where we couldn't win we made two or three. That's what counts in a full championship.
CRR: What are the projects for 2023?
Louis Deletraz: I don't have any projects today. Doing the three championships (ELMS, IMSA, WEC) like this year is fantastic, but in terms of the calendar, plus the tests, the trips, and my life on the side, it was hard. Now I am better but two weeks ago I was very tired between traveling back and forth from the US to Europe and Japan, it was not easy. I'm thinking hard about my 2023 program and I'm already set on the IMSA program with Acura and WTR. Besides that, I would like to do the ELMS or the WEC and Le Mans. I will do all three if I can win the ELMS. I won't do ELMS to be second because I don't have the time and prefer to concentrate on the program with Acura in Hypercar which is the most important for the future.

CRR: via the ELMS and the IMSA, via your teams, you have two invitations for Le Mans 2023. Spoiled for choice. How is it going?
Louis Deletraz: It is very likely that I will be going to Le Mans. You have to look at it holistically. I have the program with Wayne Taylor Racing for the long races of the IMSA championship (Daytona, Sebring, The Glen and Motul Petit Le Mans). If I can do the sprint races in LMP2, I would like that, because these are races that I like and that would make me very happy.
I would like to do a complete program in WEC with Prema or another team. I don't have a contract right now. If I have a WEC program, I will not be able to do Le Mans with Tower. If I can't find a competitive WEC program to win, I'll do Le Mans with Tower or⦠whatever.
It could also be that I do a full program in ELMS plus Le Mans with the same team. Invitations are for the team but not for the driver directly.
I want to wrap it all up by the end of November.

Louis Deletraz : Lβendurance nβa jamais Γ©tΓ© un plan B. Jβai grandi dans ce milieu par mon pΓ¨re. Je nβai pas connu sa pΓ©riode en Formule 1 car je nβΓ©tais pas encore nΓ©. Jβai une vraie passion de ce sport et je veux gagner. Je vais dans une Γ©quipe par ce que je vois du potentiel, parce quβon peut gagner des courses. Aller dans un championnat sans espoir de gagner cela ne mβintΓ©resse pas.
WRT ont tout gagnΓ© dans ce quβils ont entrepris. Jβai eu un contact avec Vincent Vosse assez tard en hiver. Quand lβoffre est venue avec Robert Kubica qui avait une telle carriΓ¨re et une telle expΓ©rience, je nβai pas eu de doute; je pensais quβon pouvait faire trΓ¨s bien. On avait beaucoup Γ apprendre mais ils connaissaient lβendurance.
La saison Γ©tait presque parfaite Γ part au Mans oΓΉ nous sommes tombΓ©s en panne au dernier tour alors que nous Γ©tions en tΓͺte. Ca a Γ©tΓ© le coup dur mais on a construit. JβΓ©tais Β« rookie Β», jβavais beaucoup Γ apprendre mais on a construit ensemble. Merci Γ Robert qui nous a beaucoup aidΓ© avec toute son expΓ©rience.
Le choix dβaller avec Prema Γ©tait risquΓ© parce que cβΓ©tait une Γ©quipe qui faisait de la monoplace mais avec mon expΓ©rience et celle de Robert en WEC, leur expΓ©rience de savoir gagner tout en monoplace, la technique, ils lβont. Pouvoir mixer ces deux mondes cβΓ©tait intΓ©ressant. Je nβai pas fait que co-piloter. DΓ¨s le dΓ©but du programme en novembre 2021, on a commencΓ© Γ travailler, mettre tout Γ plat, ils nous ont impliquΓ©s dΓ¨s le dΓ©part dβoΓΉ notre succΓ¨s.

CRR : Lors de la premiΓ¨re course Γ Barcelone en 2021 vous avez dit que vous nβauriez jamais cru que ce serait aussi facile. Est-ce que les deux championnats ont Γ©tΓ© de la mΓͺme veine ?
Louis Deletraz : Barcelone 2021 a Γ©tΓ© une course idΓ©ale : la voiture Γ©tait fantastique, les trois pilotes nβont pas fait dβerreurβ¦ cβΓ©tait facile. Mais ce nβest jamais facile. Quand je vois comment lβΓ©quipe a travaillΓ©, les tests, les ingΓ©nieurs, les trois pilotes β¦ on a eu des moments difficiles, tout le monde nβΓ©tait pas toujours dβaccord, il a fallut trouver des solutions. Cβest ce travail qui a fait que Barcelone a Γ©tΓ© facile.
Le reste de la saison a Γ©tΓ© plus dur. AprΓ¨s avoir gagnΓ© les deux premiΓ¨res course, Γ Monza et au Paul Ricard, on se battait juste pour Γͺtre sur le podium mais on nβa pas rΓ©ussit. Notre force Γ la fin est quβon nβa pas fait dβerreur. Quand on pouvait gagner on a gagnΓ©, quand on ne pouvait pas gagner on a fait deux ou trois. Cβest Γ§a qui compte sur un championnat complet.
CRR : Quels sont les projets pour 2023 ?
Louis Deletraz : Je nβen ai pas aujourdβhui. Faire les trois championnats (ELMS, IMSA, WEC) comme cette annΓ©e cβest fantastique mais au niveau calendrier, plus les tests, les voyages, ma vie Γ cΓ΄tΓ©, cβΓ©tait dur. Maintenant ca va mieux mais il yβa deux semaines, jβΓ©tais trΓ¨s fatiguΓ© entre les aller-retour US β Europe et le Japon ce nβΓ©tait pas facile. Je rΓ©flΓ©chis fortement Γ mon programme 2023 en Γ©tant dΓ©jΓ fixΓ© sur le programme IMSA avec Acura et WTR. A cΓ΄tΓ© de ca jβaimerais faire lβELMS ou le WEC et Le Mans. Je ferai les trois si je peux gagner lβELMS. Je ne ferai pas lβELMS pour Γͺtre deuxiΓ¨me pcq je nβai pas le temps et prΓ©fΓ¨re me concentrer sur le programme avec Acura en Hypercar qui est le plus important pour le futur.
CRR : via lβELMS et lβIMSA, via vos Γ©quipes, vous avez deux invitations pour Le Mans 2023. Lβembarras du choix. Comment cela se passe tβil ?
Louis Deletraz : Aller au Mans ce sera trΓ¨s probable. Il faut voir le tout de maniΓ¨re holistique. Jβai le programme avec Wayne Taylor Racing pour les courses longues du championnat IMSA (Daytona, Sebring, The Glen et Motul Petit Le Mans). Si je peux faire les courses sprint en LMP2, jβaimerais pcq ce sont des courses que jβaime et cela me ferait trΓ¨s plaisir.
Jβaimerais faire un programme complet en WEC avec Prema ou autre. Je nβai pas de contrat en ce moment. Si jβai un programme WEC, je ne pourrai pas faire Le Mans avec Tower. Si je ne trouve pas un programme WEC compΓ©titif pour gagner, je ferai Le Mans avec Tower ouβ¦ autre.
Il se pourrait Γ©galement que je fasse un programme complet en ELMS plus Le Mans avec la mΓͺme Γ©quipe. Les invitations cβest pour lβΓ©quipe mais pas pour le pilote directement.
Je veux tout conclure pour la fin novembre.
